As parents we struggle to find any time for ourselves. We feel like we rarely have the time to do things just for us.
Or at least that is the story we like to tell ourselves.
What I have come to realise is, if there is something you really want to do, something you want to achieve.
If you have a personal goal.
You need to buy back your time.
By that I mean you need to make the most of the time you do have.
I work 4 days a week. I drop children to school and then I work office hours in a busy laboratory.
In order for me to achieve anything else outside of that I must beg, borrow and steal time.
Most mornings during the week I get up between 4 and 5 am.
Two mornings a week. I head off for a gym class at 5:10 am where I do cardio until I feel like I might spew. I then get home for 6 am to take my dog for a walk. This can be my favourite part of the day. I get to see the sunrise. I gather my thoughts, I enjoy the peace.
I get home by 7 am to get the children up and out to school. By 9:30 am I am sitting at my desk in work ready for the day ahead. Yes some days I feel like I have done a days work before I have even got to work. But that is the life of a parent.
I steal time on my lunch break to answer emails and comments and quick admin things.
Then two evenings a week on my way home from work I do a gym class, get home, have a quick dinner and then read the boys a bedtime story. Often I am falling asleep while reading Harry Potter and usually get a nudge in the ribs to wake me up. I may get half an hour to do more photography business but try to go to bed between 8:30 and 9:30pm. So I can get up at 4 am to do it all over again
If I don’t get my sleep the world becomes a horrible place for me. A negative mindset takes over, and my self esteem plummets. Yes sleep is medicine for me. How about you ?
While I sometimes feel like I am just existing rather than truly living. If I stick to this schedule I carry around with me a great sense of achievement and satisfaction. I am achieving my goals, I am staying fit, I am eating and sleeping well.
I make to do lists and I check them off. I have a blackboard above my desk in my bedroom, I am a visual person hence the obsession with words and pictures.
Why am I telling you all of this boring stuff ?
Well it is because I have realised if you find something you love, you will get out of bed. You will stop watching TV. You will become more productive in all aspects of life. From your day job to your dream job. From your physical health to your mental health.
I am telling you this because I am honestly surprised by my commitment. I am surprised that me a true bed loving head will get up at 4 am to work on something that is risky and with absolutely no guarantees.
I do not wont to die wondering!
So if there is something you want to do. You will find a way to do it. You will steal those precious minutes back.
If there is something you talk about doing but that you have not done yet. Get ready to plan, sacrifice and commit. If you feel like you cant do that well then maybe you just think you want this dream but you actually don’t. Make peace with that.
Because when you are excited by something you get out of bed.
When you are excited, life is easier and you get to see incredible sunrise’s like this one.
